Calvin Brown is new to Florence, but he wasted no time getting involved in one of the city’s biggest weight-loss competitions.

After reading about Florence’s Biggest Loser in the newspaper and hearing about it on the radio, Brown became interested in the competition, and he decided to join.

Brown’s “aha!” moment came shortly after he began his new job, which is primarily outside and covers a lot of area.

“When I first started, it made me tired, climbing steps especially,” he said.

After walking around the facility for about 1.5 hours, Brown said his body was sore for about three to four days. That experience prompted him to sign up for the Biggest Loser competition.

“I joined primarily to lose weight, but really to help me kick start back to working out, and maybe an additional helping hand to help me get to a point where I can do something that will be sustaining, keep me motivated,” Brown said.

So far, Brown said he has learned much about nutrition. He said he is trying to find the perfect balance for what he should and should not eat and what helps most in his workouts and routines.

Exercising is something Brown has always done, but just being around other motivated people has been helpful.

“I’m not at the top of the list, but I’m proud to be associated with my teammates who are at the top of the list,” Brown said. “I know when we get together, I push them and they push me. I’m very competitive, so it’s kind of all about the competition for me.”

Everybody is trying to get to the top of the list, and Brown said that challenge has been helpful and pleasant.

When he signed up, Brown said he thought the competition would be a breeze, but he has been humbled.

“It’s been very enlightening from just learning the different aspects of weight management, working out and nutrition,” Brown said. “I’m just blessed to have been a part of it.”
