Meet BIGGEST LOSER contestant John McElwee!

I just needed to stay away from the grocery and pharmacy stores last week. Everywhere I went, shelves were stocked full of Easter candy.

Generally I can forgo candy, but such variety is torture when you’re in a weight-loss contest such as Florence’s Biggest Loser competition. In addition, we have two little girls to buy for.

I love those Cadbury eggs, and they only come around once a year. I’m so upset that I told the United Way they need to start the competition earlier next year so it is finished before Easter. Next year’s competitors will thank me, I’m sure.

Eating and continued workouts during vacation will be a battle, as they were last week. The kids were off for spring break, and we took a few days to visit their “Oompah” and “ Nonnie” in Suwannee, Fla. The girls love their grandparents and were super excited.

Suwannee is a small town along the Gulf Coast. The population is approximately 1,500. The closest gas station is 25 miles away. Needless to say, there is no gym nearby. So I took the advice of the latest articles in the Morning News and worked out on the cheap. I did a lot of walking and running and using the benches that line the canal for upper-body routines.

I missed my weigh-in last week, so I might have slipped to third place. I’m allowed to miss one weigh-in, as long as I donate to the Save-A-Weigh-in fund. After all, this is a fundraiser for the United Way. I will donate gladly!

Our final weigh-in is Thursday, and the competition will be over. I was happy, however, to hear that the McLeod Health & Fitness Center has a six-week summer shape-up program that starts the following week, and I will join. As I mentioned early on, the goal is to continue a healthy lifestyle for the rest of my life.
