Meet BIGGEST LOSER contestant John McElwee!

(2/15/14) I loved the snow/ice last Wednesday and Thursday. It delayed my starting weigh-in for the United Way’s Biggest Loser contest. So I ended up having Marco’s Pizza for dinner Thursday night.

My day of reckoning was on Friday afternoon when I weighed in. It was ugly.

Because of the weather, contestants had the option to weigh in Friday or Monday. I chose Friday. Let’s get this thing going!

I have a long way to go, and the first 10 weeks are just a start. I’m hoping this will change my life so I’m not sitting here a year from now having gained all the weight back.

I spent the past 15 years for the most part eating whatever I wanted. I went on a diet occasionally but had no long-term success.

In 1999, I took a job that required me to travel three weeks per month throughout the United States. While I was on the corporate expense account, my clothing sizes steadily grew. I don’t know when they were invented, but I quickly discovered the expandable waistband. You know, where you feel good about buying a size or two lower because it expands 2 or 3 inches.

Along with the Morning News and HillSouth, the McLeod Health & Fitness Center has partnered with the United Way on this contest. My first group workout with a trainer is at 7 p.m. Wednesday with Tulsi Patel. I don’t know him, but I might hate him by the end of the workout, which is a good thing.

All kidding aside, I’m looking to learn strength training and cardio workout routines that are good for me. Everyone is different, so what works for me might not work best for you. In turn, my energy level will rise, which I need to keep up with my girls. I’m sure Tulsi will provide solid guidance.

This is a 10-week contest for 60 people, but really it’s a lifelong contest. It’s not reasonable to believe all 60 of us will change our ways, but wouldn’t that be great? We then could inspire others that have wanted to drop weight over the years.

And, oh, by the way, Golden Corral was my last buffet for 10 weeks.
