By Stephanie Navarro – 72 people will begin a 10-week journey Wednesday to create a healthier lifestyle through Florence’s Biggest Loser.
The cash prizes awarded at the end of the contest will go to the individuals with the greatest percentage of pounds and the most inches lost, but the real prizes are experienced elsewhere. Lower blood pressure, increased flexibility, the creation of sustainable fitness and nutrition habits and the ability to run around with children and grandchildren are just a few of the reasons this year’s contestants have joined the program. If they work hard, these are the prizes they will win.
United Way of Florence County along with our partners – the Morning News, HillSouth, Miller Communications, Sozo Life & Leadership and McLeod Health & Fitness Center – are proud to offer the Florence’s Biggest Loser program again this year.
What you may not know is that it is only one part of a larger initiative we call Burn & Learn. Through Burn & Learn, we hope to promote healthier lifestyles to the whole community – which includes each of you.
This year, we have a variety of ways that you can learn about nutrition, fitness and having the best mindset that will lead to healthier decisions throughout the year. Make sure you read the Morning News each Wednesday and Sunday over the next 10 weeks for nutrition and training tips, workouts, recipes and more.
Besides these informational stories, we also want to let you know about a few more opportunities we have this year.
Ask Kitty and Ask Robin
Kitty Finklea is a registered dietitian/nutritionist and the official nutritionist for Florence’s Biggest Loser. Robin L. Lewis, a certified life coach and owner of Sozo Life & Leadership, has joined our team this year as a life coach and motivational speaker. These very impressive and credentialed women want to help you begin your personal journey toward better health. Just like “Dear Abby,” you can write in to the Morning News with your questions about nutrition or the mental barriers that keep you from reaching your goals. Kitty and Robin will respond online at SCNOW.com. Don’t miss the opportunity to reach out to these experts with your questions. Letters can be submitted to Melissa Rollins at the Morning News at [email protected] with the subject line Ask Kitty and Robin.
Daily Cricket
Each day during the next 10 weeks, the Biggest Loser contestants will receive an e-mail called The Daily Cricket. This daily “chirp” will serve as their conscience and guide, reminding them of their commitment to themselves and their health. The Daily Cricket is filled with recipes, nutritional facts, fitness tips and more. Best of all, it is available to anyone. You can receive The Daily Cricket by signing up at www.BurnandLearnFlorence.com .
